When Did We Discover Asbestos Was Dangerous?

Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral which was very popular in building work after the Second World War, before people discovered that it was not safe to use.

Homes which have been built prior to the 1980s need to have an asbestos inspection, and can call on Complete Demolition when they need safe asbestos removal on the Central Coast.

A dangerous material

The fibres in asbestos are released when the construction material is moved, and they are microscopic, invisible to those working in the contaminated area.

Those who are exposed to the mineral will inhale or ingest these fibres as they work, and this can lead to lung problems including mesothelioma and asbestosis.

Early reports on asbestos problems

Surprisingly, the first reports concerning issues with asbestos were found in 1930s Germany.

While American and other European doctors were doubtful about the connections, Germany acknowledged that asbestos can be carcinogenic.

Research on mesothelioma

In the 1950s, more work was being done around the world to demonstrate that there was a link between asbestos, the common asbestos worker’s lung condition could asbestosis, and cancers such as mesothelioma.

In 1959, South African researchers revealed this cancer was connected to asbestos mine workers, and quickly after this, Western Australia researchers identified cancer in Australian mine workers.

Discovery in the 1960s

By the end of the 1960s, it had become clear that serious lung conditions including lung cancer were directly connected to asbestos exposure.

There were studies that demonstrated this risk, and many factories were closed by the 1970s, although manufacturers persisted in claiming that asbestos was safe.

Can asbestos be safely handled?

Australia has a very high proportion of mesothelioma deaths, with around 10,000 people dying from this disease since the 1980s.

This means that knowing how to handle asbestos is a priority for any company, including Complete Demolition.

In addition, one in three homes in Australia have this product, and so any type of construction in your home may require expert asbestos removal.
